Final day in Reykjavic 6th July 2008

We had a free morning to explore Reykjavic, finding the harbour area and varied architecture interesting.

We left after 6pm and had a good flight back to England. (not actually flying sideways…). An excellent holiday, we may return..

The day dawned mistily and with our early start travelling westward took some time for it to clear. We soon left the main road and began the long trek across the interior, the unsurfaced road meandering between the boulders of old lava fields. The Langjokull and Hofsjokull ice-caps were visible on the horizon, looking like clouds! After stopping at the hot-springs for lunch several of us enjoyed a dip!

Several more stops were made before reaching the Gullifoss waterfall, the final stop being at the Haukadulur geyser area.

We reached Reykjavic after 10 hours, dusty but very happy with our trip.

Whale Day! July 4th 2008

A perfect day for looking for whales with calm seas and clear views for the lookout. Videos were good of the humpback whale which we followed for over 30 minutes with some very close encounters.

Returning to Reykjavik after lunch the Botanical Garden was a blaze of colour and interest. An interesting stop was made en route back at the Christmas shop, and a short-eared owl spotted close to the Hotel.

Lake Myvatn and Dettifoss 3rd July 2008

A varied day with a return visit to Lake Myvatn to see the pseudocraters, then the impressive waterfall at Dettifoss. Lunch was at the Jokulsarglijufur Park. A stop was made at Husavik where the whale museum was very good.

A day of contrasts from Godafoss waterfall, thermal area east of Lake Myvatn, to Dimmuborgir where I got lost but David had a close encounter with a Gyr falcon! An evening walk from the hotel came across a mini house!

: Church at Bjarnarhofn

We visited this church near the Shark museum where we had a taste of the dried shark.

From there we went to Stykissholmur for a trip on a boat to see nesting sea birds, including a white-tailed sea eagle and puffins and then saw a huge variety of shellfish dredged up. We declined to taste any! Back in the harbour we went out to a wood for our picnic lunch where we saw redpolls then had a long drive to our next Hotel near Akureyri.

Snaefellsnes peninsula 30th June

A great variety of land/seascapes, plants and buildings, from early morning to late evening, when we had a tour of the town and the Church at Grundarfjordur. Black sand beach, nesting kittiwakes and icefields and a cold wind!

Flight from Stanstead to Keflavik, transfer to Reykjavic, met by Dave from Discover the World. Minibus journey to Grundarfjordur on Snaefellsnes peninsula. 11 English and 4 Dutch in group. View at 11pm! Many fulmars on the water, also very windy!
